Canadian Photographer of the Month…Patrick Rochon

As well as having Artist of the Month I have now decided to feature a Photographer each month.

This month I’ve chosen Patrick Rochon. I picked him because of the unique way he uses light in his photographs. I don’t think I’ll try to explain what he does myself, instead you can read this short bio of Patrick.

Patrick is an award-winning Light Painting photographer with over 19 years of experience. First prize winner at the Nikon photo contest in Japan, Patrick has done Light Painting photography for various fashion and rock magazines, CD jackets, DVDs, posters, internet and other promotion materials. Clients also include Toyota and Honda. Born in Montreal, Canada, Patrick has lived mainly in Tokyo, New York and Paris for 15 years.

“My medium is LIGHT (moving lights) trough various media.I mainly use photography and video to capture the movement I create with lights. I started light-painting, combine with photography doing long exposure in the dark, in 1992. In 1999 I started creating videos and performances with lights. Then with friends we created a multimedia group and we built costumes of lights. Using video feedback, we performed by ”light-painting” on a giant screen creating a new visual experience.” -PR

Canadian Artist of the Month…Erica Messing

This month’s artist was recommended to me by a friend. She lives right here in my home town of Victoria, BC.  I love the way she mixes her colours so that the rocks are blue instead of grey and how everything has a vibrance to it even the most stormy pieces. Here is a little bit about the artist.

Erica is  mostly self-taught; aside from a very informative couple of years in Jean Bachynski’s art classes in high school in Winnipeg, her art instruction consisted of absorbing whatever she could from her  talented and educated sisters, and from obsessively reading books and attending workshops.

Erica has dabbled in different painting media (watercolours, oils, ink), but loves acrylics for their versatility and the vibrant colours and textures which she uses to their full extent. If you would like to know more about Erica and view more art work, visit her website http://www.ericamessing.com/

Canadian Artist of the Month-Len Gibbs

This month I am featuring an artist of whom I thought had amazing talent. I am probably being a bit biased with this one because I knew him. Not really well but well enough. He used to come into my photo lab with photos of subjects he was going paint. He’d also have photos of the progression of some the these paintings which I found to be quite fascinating, because at the time I hadn’t really done any painting myself. I can also boast that I have two of his paintings hanging on a wall in my home and a signed book showing images of his paintings with stories written to accompany each one. The book is called Thirty Stories by Favorite Writers IMAGES. Here is a short bio of Len Gibbs.

Len Gibbs 1929 -2010
Gibbs born in Cranbrook, moved to Edmonton to become creative director of an Edmonton advertising firm before becoming a full-time painter in 1968, later moving to Victoria, BC where remained for the rest of his life.
Gibbs was a self-taught artist whose mediums were acrylic on masonite and watercolour and dry brush on paper. He painted in a highly realistic style, depicting immaculate and precise detail in every painting he did, showing us moments in the real lives of real people. He was a master at his craft, as you will see in the paintings I have shown here. His subjects ranged from children to cowboys (the Alberta influence) to marine subjects.
His first solo show was in Vancouver, BC and sold out the first night. He had also shown in Europe, across Canada and the U.S. and was made an Honorary Citizen of Victoria in 1985.

My Favorite Artist

Today I want to introduce you to my step-son. He is an artist living in Britain. He’s been drawing since he could pick up a pencil or anything that made a mark. I first met him when he was 12 years old and he did a spiderman drawing that couldn’t have been made any better by the original creator of graphic novel. Since then he has been drawing, painting & writing his way through life and has done a wonderful job of it. I’ve selected just a few of his works from an illustrated book he wrote in 2007. You can see more of this art work and others on his website, Alan Hindle “a gentle treasure”.
